An SGPGI appointment starts on the institute’s own patient portal, where the official login page lists online registration, appointment schedule, cancellation and the OPD schedule as features. SGPGI is Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, a large referral hospital on Raebareli Road, Lucknow. This guide explains how an SGPGI appointment works, what the institute says about referral slips and follow-up visits, who pays and who is treated free, and which official numbers to use. It also tells you plainly what we could not confirm, so you do not travel on a guess.
General information, not medical advice. Hospital rules change. Facts below were read on 17 October 2026 on the institute’s official websites, listed at the end. Anything we could not confirm is flagged in the text.

The institute publishes OPD clinic timings and days in an OPD schedule PDF dated 13 October 2026. That file is a scanned image that we could not read, so open it in your own browser before you travel.
How an SGPGI appointment works online
The institute runs a patient portal at sgpgims.in, linked from the home page of sgpgims.org.in. Use only that address and the link on the institute’s own website. Other sites with similar names exist and are not run by the institute.
On its login page the portal lists these features: Online Registration, Appointment Schedule, Cancellation of Appointment and OPD Schedule. It also lists Investigation Reports Prints, Electronic Medical Record, Duplicate Receipts and a Patient Accounts Statement. So the same account that handles your SGPGI appointment also holds your reports and receipts after you are registered.
- Open the portal from the link on the institute’s official website.
- If you are new, use the New User option on the login page and create your account.
- Complete the online registration and note your details.
- Check the OPD Schedule feature for the department you need.
- Use the Appointment Schedule feature for your slot and keep a copy.
- If your plan changes, use the cancellation feature so the slot is released.
The portal asks you to sign in or register first, which we did not do, so we do not describe its fields, ID proof or slot rules.
The steps above follow the feature list on the portal, not a screen-by-screen walkthrough. If you have booked an appointment on the national ORS system for another hospital, our AIIMS online appointment guide shows how that system works. SGPGI uses its own portal for its own appointments.
Referral slip and follow-up rules
The portal’s instructions state that outpatients need a referral slip from their referring physician. A referral slip is a written note from a doctor who has seen you and wants a specialist opinion. Keep it with your old reports.
It also says that follow-up visits should be on the appointed days, except in an emergency. In practice this means that once a department gives you a return date, an SGPGI appointment for the same problem should be kept to that date. If you cannot attend, cancel through the portal.
These rules explain why SGPGI is described as a referral institute. It is built for conditions that need super-specialty care, not for minor illnesses that a local doctor can treat.
SGPGI OPD timings and schedule
The home page of the institute links an OPD Schedule PDF, and the file name carries the date 13 October 2026. That tells us the schedule was updated this month. Because OPD days differ by department and doctor, the PDF is the document to read before you book your SGPGI appointment.
The General Hospital section of the institute site has its own OPD schedule page. It lists Paediatrics (with an immunisation note), Medicine, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, General Surgery and Dermatology across Monday to Saturday. The grid uses symbols without a legend, so we do not read individual days from it.
We found no official page that states registration counter hours or the closing time for new OPD cards in readable text, so ask at the hospital before you travel.
The General Hospital page says it first served the institute’s employees, their families and nearby villages and towns, and that over the last decade it has also been open to the general public.
Fees: free or paid?
Third-party websites disagree on this, so read the institute’s own words. The patient portal states that SGPGI is a paid hospital and patients pay for all tests and treatment. Free indoor treatment is available only for patients in the BPL and Asadhya Rog categories, through the Patient Welfare Cell in the New OPD. That cell is also listed as a BPL/Asadhya Rog free treatment desk, open 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.
The portal adds two points. OPD pharmacy prices are the same as at the bedside pharmacy. And an Investigation Revolving Fund offers subsidised rates for tests. The institute’s home page also links a Hospital Tariff (2023) PDF and an online fee deposit page.
The 2023 tariff is a scanned PDF that we could not read, so we do not state a rupee figure for an SGPGI appointment. Check the tariff PDF or ask at the Public Relation Counter.

Ayushman Bharat at SGPGI
The home page carries a line saying Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is available at SGPGIMS. The line has no link, so it does not tell you which services or packages are covered. For how the card works at a large government hospital, read our Ayushman card at AIIMS guide, which uses official sources.
Ask the Patient Welfare Cell on 0522-2496068 which treatments are covered under Ayushman Bharat at SGPGI and what documents it needs.
Departments you can reach through an SGPGI appointment
The departments page of the institute lists these clinical departments, among others. Super-specialty care is the focus.
- Cardiology, Cardio Vascular Thoracic Surgery and Pediatric CVTS
- Gastroenterology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Neurology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology and Urology (and Pediatric Urology)
- Endocrinology, Endocrine Surgery and Breast Surgery, Pediatric Endocrinology
- Medical Oncology, Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine and Hematology
- Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery and Burn, Head and Neck Surgery, Ophthalmology
- Pulmonary Medicine, Infectious Disease, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology
- Maternal and Reproductive Health, Neonatology, Pediatric Surgical Superspecialties
- Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Anaesthesiology, Transfusion Medicine
- Radiodiagnosis and Pathology for diagnostics
The home page also names the APEX Trauma Centre, the Center of Hepatobiliary Diseases and Transplantation, the Saloni Heart Center of Excellence for Children and a Transgender Clinic. It does not give OPD hours for them, so ask the department before you plan a visit.
What to carry on the day

The official pages do not publish one document list, so this is a practical checklist based on the rules above:
- The referral slip from your referring doctor.
- A printout or screenshot of your online registration and SGPGI appointment details.
- A photo ID. Which ID the institute accepts is not stated on the pages we read.
- Old prescriptions, reports and scans, in date order.
- BPL or Asadhya Rog category papers, if you plan to ask for free indoor treatment.

Emergency care at SGPGI
The portal’s instructions say you should contact the Public Relation Officer or the Emergency Reception Station before bringing a patient to Emergency. They also say emergency care covers the institute’s own specialties, and other emergencies get first aid and referral.
It also says that ICU-bound patients should not be transferred without prior permission from the ICU in-charge, and that for blood transfusions the family must arrange replacement donors. In a life-threatening emergency, call 112 or 108 and go to the nearest emergency room first. An SGPGI appointment is for planned visits, not emergencies.
