NIMHANS OPD is the outpatient department of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences on Hosur Road, Bengaluru. It is one of India’s best-known government institutes for psychiatry, neurology and neurosurgery, and patients travel to it from every state. This guide explains how the outpatient department works for an Indian patient, using only what the institute’s own website says: where the OPD block is, which numbers to call, how a new patient asks for an appointment, which payment counters exist and which clinics are listed. Where the website does not say something, we say so plainly instead of guessing.
General information, not medical advice. This page does not diagnose or recommend treatment. Facts below were read on 17 October 2026 on nimhans.ac.in, listed at the end. Anything the official site did not state is flagged in the text.

NIMHANS OPD at a glance
These are the points the official pages confirm. Think of them as the starting checklist before you plan a trip.

| Item | What the official site says (checked 17 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Institute | National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Hosur Road, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560029 |
| OPD location | Listed as the “NIMHANS OPD Block” on the Outpatient Services page |
| Main phone | 080 26995000 (exchange numbers 5100, 5200, 5300, 5400 also listed) |
| New patient appointment | A “New Patients” booking option on the Patient Care page |
| Remote option | A Telescreening service is linked from the site |
| OPD payment counter | Working days, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; cash, card and UPI |
| Emergency | Round-the-clock emergency and neurosurgical units |
| National helpline | Tele-MANAS 14416 or 1800 891 4416, shown on the home page |
The official pages we read do not state OPD registration timings or OPD days, and the OPD Holidays tab on the Outpatient Services page links only a 2025 holiday circular. Confirm the current hours by phone on 080 26995000 before you travel.
Where is the NIMHANS OPD and how do you reach it?
The institute’s address is Hosur Road, Bengaluru 560029. The Contact Us page also gives the Marigowda Road side (Lakkasandra, Wilson Garden). The Outpatient Services page shows the OPD block on the campus off Hosur Road, near Hombegowda Nagar.
For anyone flying in, the Emergency Services page mentions that BMTC runs a 24/7 air-conditioned Vayu Vajra shuttle between the airport and the city. It does not name a stop for NIMHANS, so ask the conductor or check the BMTC route before you board. Most patients finish the last stretch by taxi or auto.
A practical tip that is not a rule: the OPD block is a busy campus, so allow extra time to find the right building and counter. Ask at the enquiry desk if you are unsure.
How does a new patient book a NIMHANS OPD appointment?
The Patient Care page has a section titled Schedule Your Care. It says new outpatients who want to book an appointment can use a “New Patients” link on that page. The page text we could read did not show where the link leads or what documents it asks for.
So the safe route is this. Open nimhans.ac.in in a normal browser, go to Patient Care, and use the New Patients link there. If it does not work, call the main number or write to the enquiry email printed on the site. Never pay anyone who offers to book a slot for you, because the institute’s own pages show a free enquiry route.
The pages we could read did not say what the New Patients booking form asks for, whether a walk-in new registration is also accepted, or whether any appointment fee applies. Ask by phone before you travel.
Telescreening: the remote option
The site links a Telescreening service from the Outpatient Services menu and from the home page, under Book Appointment. It is run from a separate site (telefacility.nimhans.ac.in). That page loaded only as an empty application shell for our tools, so we cannot describe how it works, who can use it or what it costs.
If you live far from Bengaluru, open it in a browser and read the instructions there. Telescreening is a way to begin contact with the institute, and the page does not claim it replaces an in-person visit.
NIMHANS OPD fees and payment counters
Here we stay strictly with the official page. The Payment and Charges page does not list any consultation or registration fee. It lists payment counters and the modes they accept:
| Counter | Timings (official) | Modes of payment |
|---|---|---|
| OPD (working days) | 8:00 am to 5:00 pm | Cash, card and UPI |
| Casualty (all days, including holidays) | 24 hours | Cash, card and UPI |
| SSB (working days) | 9:00 am to 4:30 pm | Cash, card and UPI |
Many third-party websites quote a registration fee, and they disagree with each other. We do not repeat any of those numbers, because the institute’s own site does not print one on the pages we read. Ask for the current amount at the counter and keep the receipt.
The official Payment and Charges page names counters and payment modes only, not a registration fee or a charge for follow-up visits.
The site also links a document titled “Schemes available in NIMHANS for outpatients” on the Information for Patient page. It is worth opening before you visit if cost is a concern. For how government health cover works in general, read our Ayushman card guide.
Departments and clinics linked to the NIMHANS OPD
The Departments page lists 40 entries, including Psychiatry, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology, Psychiatric Social Work, Neurological Rehabilitation, Speech Pathology and Audiology, the Centre for Addiction Medicine and an OCD Clinic. Not every entry is a patient clinic, because the list also includes research and teaching units such as Biostatistics and the College of Nursing.
The Speciality Clinics page lists these neurology clinics:
- NIMHANS Advanced Center for Neuromuscular Disorders
- Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Clinic
- Refractory Epilepsy Clinic
- Wilson’s Disease Clinic
- Cognitive Disorders Clinic
- Stroke Clinic and Headache Clinic
- Sleep Disorders Clinic
- Multiple Sclerosis and Neuromyelitis Optica Clinic
- Neuropathy Clinic and Pediatric Neurology Clinic
- ALS / MND Clinic, listed as held at the OPD speciality clinic service, Gate 4
The page also has Neurosurgery and Psychiatry tabs, but their lists were not readable for us, and no days or timings are given for any clinic. Ask the hospital for the day and time of the specialty clinic you need.
Five steps to plan your NIMHANS OPD visit

- Read the official page first. Open the Outpatient Services and Patient Care pages on nimhans.ac.in in a normal browser.
- Request the appointment. Use the New Patients link, or call 080 26995000 if it does not load.
- Confirm the day and hours. Ask which days the OPD registers new patients and which clinic suits your need.
- Prepare your papers. Bring a photo ID, earlier prescriptions and reports, and a note of your symptoms and dates. The site does not publish a full document list, so this is general good practice.
- Travel with company if you can. A family member helps with queues, forms and remembering what the doctor says.
Emergency: what the website says
The Patient Care page says the hospital has round-the-clock emergency and neurosurgical units equipped for critical head injuries, and the payment page lists a casualty counter open 24 hours on all days. For an emergency, do not wait for an OPD slot. Go to the nearest emergency department or call your local emergency number.
If you or someone you know is in distress
The NIMHANS home page lists Tele-MANAS, the National Tele Mental Health Programme of India, with the toll-free numbers 14416 or 1800 891 4416. If you or someone near you is thinking of self-harm or feels unable to cope, please call right away rather than waiting for an appointment. Contact a trusted person, too. We could not open the programme’s own website from our tools, so check the service’s languages and hours there or on nimhans.ac.in.
Official contact numbers
| Office | Number printed on the Contact Us page |

| Public Relations Office | 080 26995010 / 5011 |
Only institutional numbers are shown. The Contact Us page also gives an email address for enquiries, Enquiry.info@nimhans.net. Lines are busy during peak hours, so be patient and call more than once if needed.
If you are comparing institutes before you decide, our guide to government neurology hospitals in India puts NIMHANS beside AIIMS and PGI. If you live outside India, our NIMHANS international patients guide covers visa rules and the foreign-patient route, and our Indian medical visa guide explains the e-Medical Visa. One last point on the NIMHANS OPD: the details above come from the institute’s own pages, and NIMHANS OPD arrangements can change. Check the current NIMHANS OPD hours by phone before you travel, and ask at the NIMHANS OPD counter if anything looks different on the day.
