An ORS portal appointment is an OPD booking made online through the Online Registration System at ors.gov.in, a Digital India initiative that links government hospitals across the country. Instead of standing in a queue at the registration counter, you choose a hospital, a department and a slot on the portal. This guide explains what ORS is, which identity options it accepts, what a UHID is, and what to do when something goes wrong.
General information, not medical advice. Hospital rules change. Facts below were checked on 17 October 2026 against the official ORS pages listed at the end. Anything we could not confirm is flagged in the text.

What is the ORS portal and who runs it?
ORS stands for Online Registration System. The portal describes itself as a Digital India initiative that aims to give patients online access to hospital services, integrated with the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA). Its own FAQ calls it an online registration framework portal for taking OPD appointments, and the portal pages carry the logos of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
The legacy ORS home page puts it simply: ORS is a framework to link various hospitals across the country, and hospitals can come on board the platform. So an ORS portal appointment is not tied to one hospital. It is one system that many hospitals plug into.
The public dashboard on the portal gives a sense of scale. When we opened it on 17 October 2026 it showed 2,114 live hospitals, 1,012 appointments for that day so far and 14,688,433 total appointments. These figures change daily, so treat them as a snapshot, not a promise about any one hospital.
Which hospitals use an ORS portal appointment?
The portal’s nodal officer list is the public record of which hospitals are on board. When we read it on 17 October 2026 it ran to roughly 418 numbered entries across about 29 states and union territories. It includes AIIMS New Delhi and PGIMER Chandigarh. It also contains a few demo or test entries, which are not real hospitals.
Not every hospital is on the list. CMC Vellore, for example, did not appear in it when we read it, so it runs its own process. Our CMC Vellore online appointment guide covers that route. Before you plan a trip around an ORS portal appointment, search the hospital in the portal’s hospital selector or check that its name is in the nodal list.

How to book an ORS portal appointment: 5 steps

The ORS FAQ lists the booking flow as verify yourself with your mobile number, choose the hospital and department, select the date, verify with mobile or ABHA, and receive a confirmation SMS. Here is how that looks in practice for a new patient, following the FAQ’s own description.
- Open the portal and choose Book Appointment. The home page shows three large buttons: Book Appointment, Book Teleconsultation Appointment and Scan and Share. There is also a Register/Login button at the top right.
- Select the state, hospital and department. The FAQ says you choose the state, the hospital and the department or OPD.
- Pick a doctor, date and time slot. Only the slots a hospital has released appear, so a date can be unavailable.
- Enter your details as a new patient. The FAQ lists name, age or date of birth, gender, mobile number and address. Linking an ABHA ID is optional but speeds up registration. Verify the mobile number with the OTP sent to it.
- Download or print the OPD slip. After confirmation, the FAQ says to bring the slip to the hospital on the day of your visit. A confirmation SMS is also sent.
The portal also lists teleconsultation booking and other facilities on its home page: e-OPD Card, Payments, Lab Report and Blood Availability. Which of these work at a given hospital depends on that hospital.
The booking screens sit behind a login, which we did not enter, so the steps above follow the ORS home page and FAQ text. The home page describes the order as: verify yourself using ABHA, select the hospital and department, select the date, and receive an SMS.
Login options for an ORS portal appointment: ABHA or mobile

The live Register/Login screen we captured on 17 October 2026 has two tabs: Using ABHA (Health ID) and Using Mobile Number. On the ABHA tab you can sign in with an ABHA address or number, type the characters shown in the captcha, and press Proceed. The captcha can be an image or an audio captcha. The same screen has a link for people who do not have an ABHA yet, labelled “Dont have ABHA (Health ID Card)? Create Here”, and the top menu also offers Create ABHA (Health ID).
| Option | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| Mobile number | The ORS FAQ says a new patient needs a registered mobile number or an ABHA ID. An OTP is sent to the mobile number to verify it. |
| ABHA (Health ID) | Optional for a new patient, but the FAQ says it helps avoid duplicate UHIDs and record mismatches and reduces registration work for the hospital. |
| Aadhaar | Described on the older ORS home page: if your mobile number is registered with UIDAI, eKYC data is used; otherwise the system uses the name you enter. The live login screen we saw shows only the ABHA and mobile tabs. |
ORS describes ABHA (earlier called Health ID) as the first step towards safer and more efficient digital health records for you and your family. It is the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission’s health account, run by the National Health Authority; see the official ABDM website for the account itself. Our Ayushman card at AIIMS guide is a different topic: the Ayushman card covers admission and treatment costs, while ABHA is a digital health ID.
What is a UHID and why does it matter?
UHID stands for Unique Health Identification number. The legacy ORS page says a new patient gets an appointment as well as a UHID, and that if your Aadhaar number is already linked to a UHID, the appointment number is issued and the UHID stays the same. The FAQ adds that providing an ABHA ID helps prevent duplicate UHIDs.
In practice, one person should have one UHID per hospital, whichever way the ORS portal appointment is made. Use the same name spelling, date of birth and mobile number every time you book an ORS portal appointment, so the hospital can connect your old visits and reports to your new booking.
Online booking or hospital counter?
Both routes exist, and an ORS portal appointment is optional. The FAQ says patients or their attendants can book online through the website or visit the appointment-cum-registration counter at the hospital. It also says each hospital sets its own quota between online and counter bookings, built into the software. That means a hospital can show no online slots even when its counter is open.
An ORS portal appointment mainly helps you avoid long queues for the OPD appointment and registration, which the FAQ names as the benefit. It does not guarantee that a specific doctor will see you, and the hospital decides its own schedule.
Documents and details to keep ready
- A mobile number that can receive an OTP, in your own control.
- Your ABHA number or address, if you already have one (optional).
- Patient name, age or date of birth, gender and address, as the FAQ lists for new patients.
- The downloaded or printed OPD slip and the confirmation SMS from your ORS portal appointment.
- A photo ID and old reports, in case the hospital counter asks for them. Hospitals set their own document rules, so check the hospital’s own page.
Common ORS portal appointment problems and fixes
Portals fail, slots fill up and OTPs arrive late. These checks usually help:
- No hospital or no slot: the hospital may not be on ORS, may not have released slots, or may have used up its online quota. Try another date or use the counter.
- OTP not received: check that the mobile number is typed correctly and has network coverage, then request a new OTP.
- Captcha unreadable: the login screen has a refresh icon next to the captcha and an audio captcha option.
- Slot or booking trouble: the portal says to contact the nodal officer of the respective hospital for appointment booking or slot availability. The official nodal officer list is published on ors.gov.in, and the portal also has a Feedback and a Contact page.
- Duplicate or wrong details: book with the same details every time so one UHID is reused.
Can I cancel or reschedule an ORS portal appointment?
The official pages we could read do not explain cancellation or rescheduling, and the ORS FAQ has no question about it. We therefore do not describe a cancel button or a refund rule.
The ORS pages we could read do not state a cancel or reschedule rule. For any problem with booking or slot availability, the ORS site tells patients to contact the nodal officer of the hospital concerned, and it publishes a list of nodal officers by hospital.
A practical point: if you cannot attend, tell the hospital through its listed channels so the slot is not wasted. For hospital-specific rules, such as follow-up visits, read the hospital’s own guide, for example our AIIMS Delhi online appointment page.
Beware of look-alike sites
Search results for ORS queries include many private websites that are not the government portal. The official portal is the ors.gov.in address, and every official page we used for this guide sits on that domain. Check the address bar before you type an OTP or ABHA details, and be careful with any site that is not ors.gov.in. We do not link to third-party booking sites.
